But, Why Not, Me?

Sports were always on Morgan Ragan’s mind, from when she was a child to now.

The feeling has yet to stop, and now is even stronger.

Playing basketball was always her outlet and really became more of her goal throughout her life.

A passion which ultimately led to a career in the sports media field.

This livelihood that Ragan has built, did not happen overnight.

“I grew up playing basketball and played all throughout school, high school and then college Ragan said. “I even played in the (San Francisco) pro-am league out here.” But, injuries ended her career on the court; playing the game she loved, so she turned to the next best thing; broadcasting.

This was not an easy task and still is a definite grind every day for Ragan, as she continues to push through and make it all come together. “I actually, when I was first starting out, thought the place to go was L.A., in terms of “making it.”

Ragan, who is originally from the Sacramento (California) area took a big leap of faith and decided to pursue the possibilities in Los Angeles.

“I think I had to go to L.A to tell myself I don’t want to be there, I mean it helped to grow me as a person, but it wasn’t the place for me.” Ragan said, on the job she had in L.A., which was at CMEG, where she was a production coordinator and receptionist.

From there she worked at Nike and helped to blog for the company. But, she eventually made her way back home to Sacramento.

Breaking barriers as a Sports Reporting Intern for News10 in Sacramento was the first big moment for Ragan as she realized that “this was where I was supposed to be.” Sports was her calling and she felt so at home to be in that environment, once again.

The opportunity became more in her grasp as she got the position of morning show host and producer on Sports KHTK 1140, evolving more headway in writing, producing, editing, and so many other essential areas, on a bigger scale.

Which then brought Ragan the chance to sideline report for Republic F.C., the USL team in Sacramento.

“I got more experience with being more versatile in content, I swear being able to produce and edit stuff is huge in this field.”

At KHTK, she had immense respect for the work and the process of getting better every single day and ended up getting fired on April Fool’s Day of 2016, along with her co-host, Dave “Deuce” Mason.

“Even if you think you’re doing a fantastic job, like me and Deuce thought we were, it’s never certain what can happen, especially in this industry, where everything is always changing.”

From being a star-athlete in basketball to leading the ranks in broadcasting, working at Sports 1140 KHTK, Good Day Sacramento, for the Sacramento Kings as their JR Manager to now working for the NBA G-League, Stockton Kings.

Throughout it all, Ragan is now working as the Stockton Kings Color Analyst, and has been there since October 2018, along with Deuce Mason, as well as, also co-hosting a podcast with Mason; The Deuce & Mo Podcast. Ragan and Mason, actually decided to make a podcast after they both got fired from KHTK and the rest is history (as they say, right?).

Just a few words from Morgan to the women reading this: “It doesn’t matter who you are, I always thought I could only do sideline reporting and never thought being a color analyst was in the books for me. So I just want to say that anyone can do anything, ‘if you want to be in the booth, find a way’.”

No matter the process it takes, the determination will keep you going throughout and Ragan continues to constantly be the best that she can be, always learning and always being present.

Great article on a great sports analyst/reporter/podcaster/etc...The future is bright for Miss Ragan and I'm glad that she decided that LA was not for hee. A win for Sacramento
